A little bit about anti-gas medications

Simethicone (e.g. Mylicon Drops, Infacol Wind Drops, Phazyme Drops) and also many antacids (Maalox, Mylanta) also contain simethicone.

Simethicone reduces the amount of gas in a baby's stomach by dispersing the foam that forms when air is swallowed during feeding. It helps all the tiny bubbles to join together and make larger bubbles that make it easier for the gas to be brought up with a burp.  It's used to relieve painful pressure that is caused by excess gas in the stomach. This gas may occur in many circumstances, including air swallowing, indigestion, ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome, diverticulosis, and after surgery.

Simethicone can assist in removing some air from the stomach but it has no significant effect on gas in the intestines. Once in the intestines the gas will always come out the other end. Commonly used to treat colic but unfortunately simethicone trials have found that simethicone worked no better than a placebo in reducing the level of distress experienced by a colicky baby. The reason for this is that the medication is used on the assumption that infant colic is due to swallowed air, but studies have shown that swallowed air is not the cause for infant colic.

Simethicone was approved by the FDA in 1952. There are no known drug interactions or side effects associated with simethicone.
