Benefiber, poop holding and the joys of potty learning
HELP!

what can I mix benefiber in? I want to try to add fiber to Theo because he is holding his stools for 3 to 4 days since we started PLing in the summer. He has pooped on the potty once last week and then 4 days lter he went in his pull up And here I thought once he figure out how to go on the potty then we would be done. I am afraid to put anything with fiber in a sippy cup but he really need something. Espeshaly since our little battle with "possible flu" he has really struggled to get back on real food. He has reverted to the all crackers all the time diet. I get 1 good meal a day now, so its improved in the past 3 days to that at least. But even his regular diet is still limited compared to the "average" 3 almost 4 year old.

So ideas for fiber and some info on benefiber. I want to see what we can do before his 4 year check up in January. Because I know if I ask the doctor they will say mirilax and I just don't want to go there

Thank you for reading. Sorry nothing exciting with pictures

Re: Benefiber, poop holding and the joys of potty learning
Oh I know far too much about stool holding lol...... Not fun.

Would he go "normally" in nappies? If you backtracked and let him fully recover from the flu? Might be worth it if so. Honestly, if I learned nothing else with my four, it's that they will do it when they are ready and not before. K was dry at 16 months - but another year before she would poop anywhere but a nappy. I barely remember the stress of it now, at the time I was really frustrated!

As for mixing the benefiber, hopefully someone who has used it can help.

xx

Benifiber has worked great for Sebastian. You can put it in, or on, anything. It has no taste and dissolves better then Mirilax. I put 1 teaspoon in Sebastian's rice milk at breakfast, lunch and dinner. You can put it in any kind of beverage or just sprinkle it on food.

Re: Benefiber, poop holding and the joys of potty learning
Kate, because he "knows" he is suposed to go in the potty he started the stool holiding this summer. He now only goes about 2x a week. ugg. He usualy does it during nap time. I have told him repetedly that if he prefers to go in his diaper fine, but let me know so I can change it right away, I HATE having to clean dryed poop of his butt. (sorry for the TMI) but he doesn't he just poops and then goes to sleep in it
The day he pooped in the potty it was all on his own. We even celebrated with ice cream for dinner. I have no clue what to do with him.

Going to get some benifiber and try adding it to his morning milk. Id dearly love to give him some apple juice but it just causes too much reflux, though it works when I do let him have it lol

Re: Benefiber, poop holding and the joys of potty learning
Benefibre is the easiest stuff. I just mix it with a bit of milk - you wouldn't even know it's there. I can't see why you couldn't add it to a sippy - it works just fine in a bottle of formula, in my experience. I hope it gives your little guy relief!

BIG HUG!
pH study in Aug 2007 showed reflux
Barium swallow in Jan 2008 came back normal
Gastroscopy in Jan 2008 showed oesophagitis
Meds change from 30mg Losec to 40mg Nexium in Jan 2008
pH study in June 2008 showed reflux, but that the meds were keeping the acid under control
(Sam's drinking formula much better. He is now putting tiny bits of some table food in his mouth and swallowing them!!! The bulk of his nutrition still comes from foods of pureé consistency, though.)

Re: Benefiber, poop holding and the joys of potty learning
I'm sure it must be around, Kate. If you can get it in SA, you should be able to get it anywhere! (Here it comes as a white powder in a green plastic bottle that's on the shelf with the all other over-the-counter constipation meds.)

Re: Benefiber, poop holding and the joys of potty learning
It's working! Day 3 of poop on the potty. Not large poops, but enough that makes me think it's working. They are still hard, but he is moving them and they are going in the potty
